Connecting AT&T SynJ With Streaming Music On Hold

How To Connect Music On Hold External Device to AT&T SynJ Telephone SB67158

The AT&T SynJ phone system (see review of A&T SynJ telephone) has been a useful and affordable solution for small offices that need to upgrade from a low-quality office phone that does not allow music on hold integration.

Connecting the music on hold source, however, must be done correctly to avoid frustration! We have taken photos of a streaming music on hold device being connected to a SynJ phone and put them together in an instructional video. Our goal is to provide an up-close look at the connectors required for using the external music on hold device. We have also added brief instructions on the programming of the phone to allow use of the external music on hold feed.

This is the video titled, Correct Audio Cable Connections for AT&T SynJ SB67158 Music On Hold AUX-IN External Device. It was created by Easy On Hold (https://easyonhold.com) to assist AT&T SynJ telephone users in connecting an external music on hold device. In this video we connect a Grace Digital music on hold streaming internet radio, using the Mono Out port on the player. It is important to use the cable that came with the AT&T SynJ phone.

The Mono Out connection on the external music on hold device is RCA type. The AT&T audio cable that comes with the SynJ phone provides the small 2.5mm plug that fits into the phone HEADPHONE-AUX-IN jack on the side of the phone. The other end of the cable terminates in a 3.5mm plug, which must NOT be placed into the music on hold player. Inserting a 3.5mm male audio plug into an RCA receptacle may cause damage to the music player. To help, Easy On Hold ships a special connector/adapter that will convert the 3.5mm plug to the RCA type, suitable for use with the music on hold player. The RCA connection on the back of the music on hold player is the kind most common with audio equipment. For questions, call 1-888-798-4653 and request support.

The following is the narration script for the video:

IF YOU’RE USING STREAMING MUSIC ON HOLD WITH THE AT&T SYNJ TELEPHONE, IT’S IMPORTANT TO BE SURE YOU’VE GOT THE RIGHT CONNECTION BETWEEN THE PHONE AND THE MUSIC ON HOLD PLAYER.

THIS IS THE PLAYER, WHICH PROVIDES CONTINUOUS AUDIO CALLERS CAN HEAR ON HOLD. THE BEST CONNECTION WILL BE PROVIDED BY THE CABLE THAT COMES WITH THE AT&T PHONE. THAT CABLE HAS TWO DIFFERENT-SIZED ENDS. ONE IS 3.5 MILLIMETER AND THE OTHER IS A TWO POINT FIVE MILLIMETER PLUG ON A 90-DEGREE ANGLE.

THE SMALLER, 2 POINT 5 MILLIMETER PLUG GOES IN THE PHONE, AND THE LARGER PLUGS REQUIRES AN ADAPTER OR CONVERTER BEFORE IT CAN BE USED WITH THE MUSIC ON HOLD PLAYER. THE ADAPTER NEEDED IS THE MONOPRICE JX-3053-B, AVAILABLE AT MONOPRICE DOT COM. MAKE SURE YOU’RE USING ONLY THE JX-3053-B PLUG ADAPTER.

HERE’S THE ADAPTER. IT ACCEPTS THE 3 POINT 5 MILLIMETER PLUG, AND CONVERTS THE CONNECTION TO RCA-TYPE, WHICH IS THE ONLY TYPE THAT CAN BE USED WITH THE MUSIC ON HOLD PLAYER.

PLUG THE 3 POINT FIVE MILLIMETER PLUG INTO THE ADAPTER AND THEN THE ADAPTER FITS IN AND OVER THE RECEPTACLE ON THE MUSIC ON HOLD PLAYER. NEVER PLACE A 3.5 MILLIMETER PLUG INTO AN RCA FITTING WITHOUT FIRST CONVERTING IT TO AN RCA-TYPE PLUG. DAMAGE TO THE PLAYER CAN OCCUR.

THE SMALLER END OF THE CABLE, THE 2 POINT 5 MILLIMETER PLUG, FITS DIRECTLY INTO THE HEADSET/AUX RECEPTACLE ON THE SYN-J PHONE. NEVER USE ANY PLUG OTHER THAN THE 2.5 MILLIMETER PLUG IN THE HEADSET/AUX RECEPTACLE.

IT’S NOT ENOUGH TO CONNECT THE AUDIO CABLE BETWEEN THE PLAYER AND THE PHONE. THE PHONE MUST BE PROGRAMMED TO USE THE PLAYER, REFERRED TO AS ‘EXTERNAL DEVICE’.
TOUCH ‘MENU/ENTER’ AND SCROLL TO ‘BASE SETUP’ AND HIT ENTER.

THEN SCROLL TO MUSIC ON HOLD AND HIT ENTER. // SCROLL TO MOH ON OFF AND ENTER. // SCROLL TO ‘ON’ AND HIT ENTER. // GOING BACK IN THE MENU, SCROLL TO MUSIC ON HOLD SOURCE. // SCROLL TO AUX IN DEVICE AND HIT ENTER. //

NOW, LET’S TEST THE SETUP. SCROLL TO REVIEW MOH AND ENTER. // SCROLL TO AUX IN DEVICE AND ENTER // YOU SHOULD HEAR THE SOUND COMING INTO THE PHONE FROM THE MUSIC ON HOLD PLAYER, AND SEE THE CONFIRMATION, AUX IN DEVICE PLAYING. // ADJUST THE VOLUME ON THE PLAYER.
